Tukhm-e-Karela (Bitter Gourd Seeds) are the mature seeds of Momordica charantia, traditionally valued in South Asian herbal practices for digestive, metabolic, and general wellness support.
How to Use: Use in suitable traditional preparations according to appropriate professional guidance, particularly when intended for medicinal purposes.
Important Note: Bitter Gourd Seeds are different from Karela fruit and concentrated extracts. They should not be considered a treatment for diabetes or a replacement for insulin or prescribed medication. Pregnant women, people using blood-sugar-lowering medicines, and individuals with G6PD deficiency should seek professional guidance before medicinal use.
Tukhm-e-Karela (Bitter Gourd Seeds) are the mature seeds obtained from Momordica charantia L., a climbing plant belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family. Bitter gourd is widely cultivated throughout South Asia and other tropical and subtropical regions, where its fruit is commonly consumed as a vegetable and different parts of the plant have a long history of traditional use.
The seeds are found inside the characteristic bitter fruit. As the fruit matures, the seeds become harder and develop a distinctive flattened appearance. Although the fruit, seeds, leaves, and extracts all originate from the same plant, they are not chemically or nutritionally identical and should not be treated as interchangeable materials.
Tukhm-e-Karela has traditionally been associated with digestive, metabolic, and general wellness preparations, but strong claims regarding diabetes, blood glucose, weight loss, infections, or other diseases should not be made for ordinary whole seeds.
Bitter Gourd Seeds are valued as a traditional botanical material containing naturally occurring oils, proteins, phytosterols, phenolic compounds, and other plant constituents.

Common Fruit Names: Bitter Gourd, Bitter Melon, Karela
Product Form: Whole Dried Seeds
Tukhm-e-Karela are the seeds contained within mature bitter gourd fruit.
Bitter gourd begins with green immature fruit commonly used as a vegetable. As the fruit ripens, its external color and internal tissues change, and the seeds mature and harden.
The mature seeds can then be separated, cleaned, and dried for appropriate traditional or botanical use.
This distinction is particularly important.
Most people are familiar with Karela fruit, while Tukhm-e-Karela specifically means its seeds.
Therefore:
Bitter Gourd Seeds ≠ Bitter Gourd Fruit
Seeds ≠ Leaves
Whole Seeds ≠ Seed Oil
Whole Seeds ≠ Concentrated Extract
Research on Fruit Extract ≠ Evidence for Whole Seeds
The chemical composition and concentration of active constituents can differ substantially between plant parts and preparations.
Bitter gourd seeds contain a complex mixture of naturally occurring nutritional and phytochemical constituents.
Depending on variety, maturity, processing, and analytical method, these may include:
Exact concentrations vary between seed samples.
Bitter gourd seeds naturally contain oil.
The fatty-acid composition of the seed oil can include various saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. One particularly notable component reported in bitter melon seed oil is conjugated linolenic acid, especially α-eleostearic acid.
This is an interesting nutritional and chemical characteristic of the seed oil, but its presence should not be interpreted as proof that ordinary whole seeds prevent or treat disease.
Seed oil, whole seeds, and concentrated fatty-acid preparations are also not equivalent products.
Bitter gourd seeds naturally contain protein and various amino-acid-containing compounds.
However, the amount depends on factors such as:
Specific protein percentages should only be placed on a commercial product label when supported by analysis of the actual product.
Different parts of Momordica charantia have a substantial history in South Asian, Ayurvedic, Unani, and other traditional systems.
Traditional associations have included:
However, historical use should be clearly distinguished from established clinical treatment.
Bitter gourd is particularly famous for its association with blood glucose.
Research has examined different preparations of Momordica charantia in relation to glucose metabolism. These preparations may include fruit, juice, extracts, powders, isolated compounds, and other plant materials.
The results cannot automatically be transferred to ordinary whole seeds.
Therefore, Tukhm-e-Karela should not be advertised as:
People with diabetes should continue appropriate monitoring and prescribed treatment.
Because bitter gourd preparations can have biological effects related to glucose metabolism, combining concentrated preparations with glucose-lowering medicines may potentially contribute to excessively low blood glucose in some circumstances.
Possible symptoms of low blood glucose can include:
People using insulin or glucose-lowering medicines should seek appropriate professional guidance before using concentrated bitter gourd preparations medicinally.
Charantin is one of the compounds frequently discussed in relation to bitter gourd.
However, product descriptions should be careful not to imply that every part of the plant contains the same amount.
The presence or concentration of a compound in fruit or a standardized extract cannot automatically be assigned to whole seeds without product-specific analysis.
Therefore:
Charantin research ≠ Guaranteed Charantin level in whole seeds
and
Isolated compound research ≠ Proven effect of ordinary Tukhm-e-Karela
Another widely discussed constituent associated with bitter gourd is often called polypeptide-p.
It is frequently described online in overly simplified terms such as “plant insulin.” This wording can be misleading.
Even where insulin-like or glucose-related experimental activity has been investigated, this does not make bitter gourd seeds equivalent to human insulin or prescribed insulin therapy.
Tukhm-e-Karela must never be positioned as an insulin substitute.
Bitter gourd contains various triterpenoid-related constituents, including compounds often described within the broader group of cucurbitane-type triterpenoids and momordicoside-related compounds.
The distribution of these compounds can vary according to:
Research using concentrated extracts should therefore not be directly applied to ordinary dried seeds.
Bitter botanicals have traditionally been associated with digestion in several traditional systems.
Tukhm-e-Karela may therefore appear in traditional formulations related to digestive wellness.
However, persistent abdominal pain, vomiting, severe diarrhea, blood in stool, unexplained weight loss, or other significant digestive symptoms require appropriate medical evaluation rather than self-treatment with herbal seeds.
Bitter gourd is also frequently promoted online for weight loss.
Some experimental research has investigated bitter gourd constituents in relation to metabolism and body composition.
This does not establish ordinary bitter gourd seeds as a proven weight-loss treatment.
Tukhm-e-Karela should not be marketed as:
Changes in body weight depend on many nutritional, metabolic, behavioral, and medical factors.
Different parts and extracts of bitter gourd have demonstrated antioxidant-related activity in laboratory research.
The plant contains several naturally occurring compounds that may participate in such activity.
However:
Laboratory antioxidant activity ≠ Proven treatment for disease
and
Extract activity ≠ Guaranteed effect from whole dried seeds
Antioxidant terminology should therefore be used responsibly.
Bitter gourd has been extensively investigated in experimental research.
Areas of scientific interest include:
Much of this research involves extracts, isolated compounds, laboratory models, or animals.
These findings should not be converted into claims that Tukhm-e-Karela cures diseases in humans.
Tukhm-e-Karela may appear in several forms:
These preparations can differ substantially in strength and chemical composition.
A dose or result from a concentrated extract study should never automatically be applied to ordinary whole seeds.
Bitter gourd seeds deserve additional caution because seed material contains compounds that are not present in exactly the same proportions as the commonly eaten immature fruit.
Some seed proteins and other constituents have demonstrated significant biological activity in experimental research.
This is another reason why medicinal use of concentrated seed preparations should not be treated as equivalent to ordinary culinary consumption of Karela fruit.
Pregnancy requires particular caution with medicinal or concentrated bitter gourd preparations.
Experimental evidence involving bitter gourd plant materials and certain constituents has raised reproductive-safety concerns. Therefore, concentrated medicinal use—particularly of seeds or seed-derived preparations—should be avoided during pregnancy unless specifically advised by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
Traditional use should not be considered proof of safety during pregnancy.
Reliable safety information for concentrated bitter gourd seed preparations during breastfeeding is limited.
Breastfeeding women should therefore avoid self-directed medicinal use of concentrated seed extracts and seek professional advice before regular supplemental use.
Bitter gourd seeds should not be marketed as a fertility treatment.
Experimental studies involving different parts of the plant have explored reproductive effects, but such findings do not justify claims that Tukhm-e-Karela improves fertility, prevents pregnancy, or provides reliable contraception.
Neither fertility enhancement nor contraceptive effects should be promised.
Bitter gourd fruit is consumed as food in many households, but this does not automatically establish concentrated seed preparations as suitable for children.
Children are more vulnerable to:
Medicinal use of seed extracts in children should not be undertaken without qualified guidance.
Bitter melon seeds have been reported to contain vicine, a compound of particular concern for individuals with G6PD deficiency.
In susceptible individuals, vicine-related exposure may potentially contribute to hemolytic problems.
For this reason, people known to have G6PD deficiency should exercise particular caution with bitter gourd seeds and seek appropriate medical advice before medicinal consumption.
This seed-specific caution is important and should not be overlooked.
Because concentrated bitter gourd preparations may affect glucose metabolism, people scheduled for surgery should inform their healthcare team about herbal supplements they are using.
Blood-glucose control around surgery can be clinically important.
Self-directed concentrated bitter gourd supplementation immediately around surgical procedures should be avoided unless cleared by the treating healthcare professional.
Special caution is appropriate for people taking:
The risk is more relevant with concentrated medicinal preparations than ordinary culinary consumption of Karela fruit.
Tukhm-e-Karela should be used according to the intended product form and traditional preparation.
Whole dried seeds may be:
Because the seeds are chemically different from the commonly eaten fruit and may contain biologically active constituents, a universal medicinal dose should not be recommended for self-treatment.
For medicinal use—especially for blood-glucose purposes—qualified professional guidance is appropriate.
Good-quality Tukhm-e-Karela should ideally have:
If intended for consumption, food-grade cleanliness and contaminant control are important.
Because seeds contain natural oils, proper storage helps protect quality.
Store Tukhm-e-Karela:
Do not use seeds showing mold, infestation, excessive moisture, or a rancid or abnormal odor.

Tukhm-e-Karela (تخم کریلہ) refers specifically to the mature seeds of Momordica charantia. The seeds should not be considered chemically identical to Karela fruit, juice, leaves, seed oil, or concentrated extracts.
Although bitter gourd has a long history of traditional use and has been extensively researched in relation to glucose metabolism, ordinary Tukhm-e-Karela should not be presented as a cure for diabetes or as a replacement for insulin or prescribed glucose-lowering medication.
People taking diabetes medicines should use medicinal bitter gourd preparations cautiously because of the possibility of excessive blood-glucose lowering. Pregnant women and individuals with G6PD deficiency should exercise particular caution with bitter gourd seeds. Concentrated medicinal use in children or during breastfeeding should only be considered with appropriate professional guidance.
