Rose Oil / Roghan Gulab – روغن گلاب is a highly aromatic botanical oil obtained from the fragrant flowers of selected Rose (Rosa) species. Rose has been valued for centuries in traditional perfumery, personal care, aromatic preparations, and botanical wellness practices because of its distinctive rich, floral, sweet, fresh, and elegant fragrance.
True rose essential oil is a highly concentrated aromatic preparation and is very different from rose water, rose fragrance oil, rose-infused carrier oil, or synthetic rose perfume. Depending on the product and manufacturing method, genuine rose essential oil may be obtained through distillation of fragrant rose flowers, while rose absolute is produced using a different extraction process.
Among the most important roses used for aromatic oil production is Damask Rose (Rosa × damascena Mill.), belonging to the Rosaceae family.
Quality Rose Oil should preserve the characteristic floral aroma of rose flowers while being appropriately processed, packaged, and protected from excessive heat, light, oxygen, and contamination.

Rose Oil is a concentrated aromatic product obtained from fragrant rose flowers.
The petals and other floral tissues contain very small quantities of volatile aromatic compounds. During appropriate distillation, these compounds are separated from the plant material and collected as highly concentrated rose essential oil.
Because the natural oil yield from rose flowers is relatively low, a substantial quantity of flowers is required to produce a comparatively small amount of genuine rose essential oil.
This is one reason authentic rose essential oil is considered a valuable aromatic botanical material.
One of the most important botanical sources of Rose Oil is the Damask Rose (Rosa × damascena Mill.).
Botanical Name: Rosa × damascena Mill.
Genus: Rosa
Family: Rosaceae
Plant Type: Flowering Shrub
Primary Aromatic Part: Flowers
The Damask Rose is particularly valued for its powerful fragrance and long history of use in perfumery and aromatic preparations.
Other rose species may also be used commercially, so the exact botanical identity should always correspond with the actual source material used in a specific product.
Rose Oil and Rose Water are related but distinctly different products.
Rose Oil is the concentrated oil-soluble aromatic fraction obtained during the production process.
Rose Water is the aromatic water produced during rose distillation and contains water-soluble and dispersed volatile aromatic constituents in much lower concentrations.
Therefore, Rose Oil is considerably more concentrated than Rose Water and should be used in much smaller quantities.
Rose Water should not be used as a reference for determining how much concentrated Rose Oil can safely be applied.
Rose Essential Oil and Rose Absolute should also be distinguished.
Generally obtained through steam or water distillation of rose flowers.
Produced through solvent-based extraction and subsequent processing, resulting in an aromatic material with a somewhat different chemical and fragrance profile.
Both may provide a characteristic rose aroma, but they are different aromatic preparations and should be identified correctly on product labels.
Not every product labeled with a rose fragrance is genuine botanical Rose Essential Oil.
Derived from actual rose flowers and contains naturally occurring volatile botanical compounds.
May contain synthetic fragrance ingredients, natural aromatic materials, or a combination of both.
Usually consists of rose material infused into a carrier oil and is much less concentrated than true Rose Essential Oil.
These products can differ considerably in composition, aroma, concentration, cost, and intended use.
The exact chemical composition of Rose Oil varies according to rose species, geographic origin, harvest conditions, flower maturity, processing, and distillation method.
Depending on the botanical source and batch, naturally occurring aromatic constituents may include:
Citronellol, geraniol, and nerol are among the compounds commonly associated with the characteristic fragrance profile of Damask Rose Oil.
Exact percentages should only be stated when supported by laboratory analysis of the specific batch.
Rose Oil is primarily valued for its distinctive fragrance.
Its aroma may be described as:
Even a small quantity of concentrated Rose Oil can contribute a noticeable floral character to a properly formulated aromatic blend.
Rose has a long cultural history across South Asia, the Middle East, Central Asia, Europe, and other regions.
Rose flowers and rose preparations have traditionally been associated with:
Historical use is valuable cultural information, but traditional use alone does not establish a modern medical treatment claim.
Rose Oil is widely appreciated in aromatherapy because of its rich floral fragrance.
When used appropriately, its aroma can contribute to a pleasant, calming, and luxurious sensory environment.
Common aromatic applications include:
Describing an aroma as calming or relaxing refers to the sensory experience and should not be interpreted as a claim that Rose Oil treats anxiety disorders, depression, insomnia, or other medical conditions.
Rose Oil is particularly important in fine fragrance compositions.
Its complex floral character can add richness and depth to perfumes and aromatic blends.
It may complement fragrance families such as:
Because genuine Rose Oil is highly aromatic, relatively small amounts may provide a noticeable contribution to a fragrance formulation.
Rose Oil may be incorporated into appropriately formulated massage oils.
Since genuine Rose Essential Oil is highly concentrated, it should generally be diluted with a suitable carrier oil before skin application.
Suitable carrier oils may include:
The appropriate concentration depends on the intended formulation, area of application, and individual sensitivity.
Rose Oil is widely used as an aromatic ingredient in cosmetic and personal-care products.
Depending on formulation and concentration, it may be incorporated into:
Its primary role in many such formulations is to provide its characteristic rose fragrance and enhance the sensory experience of the product.
Concentrated Rose Oil should not normally be applied undiluted over large areas of skin.
Essential oils contain biologically active aromatic molecules and can cause sensitivity in some individuals.
Possible reactions may include:
Appropriate dilution in a suitable carrier oil or properly formulated cosmetic product is recommended.
Before using a new Rose Oil preparation over a larger skin area, apply a small amount of the properly diluted product to a limited area of intact skin.
Observe for:
If a reaction develops, discontinue use.
People with sensitive skin or known fragrance sensitivities should use additional caution.
Rose Oil is commonly incorporated into facial cosmetic formulations because of its fragrance and luxurious sensory profile.
When properly formulated, it may be used in:
However, concentrated Rose Oil should not be promoted as a treatment for:
Skin diseases require appropriate assessment and treatment rather than reliance on an essential oil.
Rose Oil may be included at an appropriate concentration in selected hair and scalp formulations.
Possible applications include:
Its primary contribution is generally its pleasant floral aroma.
It should not be claimed to cure hair loss, reverse baldness, treat alopecia, or permanently stimulate new hair growth.
The rich floral aroma of Rose Oil makes it suitable for properly formulated bath and body products.
It may be incorporated into:
Because oil does not disperse evenly in plain water, concentrated Rose Essential Oil should not simply be poured directly into bath water without an appropriate formulation or dispersing medium.
Undispersed essential-oil droplets may contact the skin at a high concentration.
Rose fragrance is often culturally associated with romance, relaxation, comfort, and emotional wellbeing.
Some individuals may find its aroma pleasant or relaxing.
However, Rose Oil should not be promoted as a medical treatment for:
A pleasant fragrance experience and treatment of a diagnosed health condition are not the same thing.
Rose and rose-derived preparations have a long history of traditional use in personal care and cultural wellness practices.
However, Rose Essential Oil should not be claimed to treat:
Traditional associations should be clearly distinguished from established clinical treatment.
Rose flowers, rose extracts, and Rose Essential Oil have been studied in various laboratory and experimental settings.
Research areas may include:
These studies help researchers understand rose chemistry but do not prove that ordinary topical or aromatic Rose Oil use can prevent, cure, or treat diseases.
Research involving isolated compounds, concentrated extracts, animals, or laboratory systems should not automatically be converted into human therapeutic claims.
Rose Essential Oil should not be treated like ordinary culinary oils.
It is very different from:
True Rose Essential Oil is an extremely concentrated aromatic preparation and is generally used in very small quantities.
Rose petals and certain rose preparations may be used in foods and traditional culinary products, but this does not mean every concentrated Rose Essential Oil is suitable for swallowing.
Unless the specific product has been:
it should not be casually swallowed or added to drinking water, tea, milk, desserts, or herbal preparations.
Products sold for external or aromatic use should be used according to their intended labeling.
This distinction is especially important for traditional uses.
Rose Water can be used in some culinary and cosmetic applications when manufactured appropriately for that purpose.
Concentrated Rose Essential Oil is significantly stronger.
Therefore:
One should never substitute concentrated Rose Oil for Rose Water in equal quantities.
A formulation requiring Rose Water should not automatically be prepared using the same amount of Rose Essential Oil.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding require additional care with concentrated essential oils.
Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should seek appropriate professional guidance before extensive use of concentrated Rose Essential Oil, particularly for frequent topical applications.
Internal self-administration should be avoided unless specifically advised in an appropriate professional context.
Rose Essential Oil should be handled carefully around children.
Concentrated aromatic oils should never be mistaken for ordinary rose water.
Avoid applying concentrated Rose Oil to:
Wash hands after handling concentrated oil, particularly before touching the eyes.
Natural botanical products can cause allergic or sensitivity reactions in some individuals.
People with:
should use additional caution.
“Natural” does not automatically mean that a concentrated aromatic product is non-irritating for every person.
Essential oils should be used cautiously around pets.
Avoid:
If significant accidental exposure occurs and an animal becomes unwell, seek veterinary guidance.
The quality of Rose Oil depends on several important factors.
These include:
Because Rose Essential Oil is valuable, product authenticity and botanical identity are particularly important considerations.
Where exact composition or authenticity needs to be confirmed, appropriate laboratory testing is more reliable than aroma alone.
As a natural botanical product, Rose Oil can vary between batches.
Its fragrance and chemical profile may be affected by:
Slight natural variations in aroma therefore do not necessarily indicate poor quality.
Proper storage helps preserve the delicate aromatic profile of Rose Oil.
Exposure to air, heat, and light can gradually alter essential oils.
Possible signs of deterioration include:
Old or poorly stored essential oils may also have an increased potential to irritate sensitive skin.
