Description
Chamomile is traditionally valued for supporting nervous system health, particularly in women. It exhibits mild analgesic and sedative effects along with anodyne, antibacterial, anticonvulsant, antifungal, antihistaminic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antispasmodic, aromatic, bitter, calmative, carminative, demulcent, diaphoretic, digestive, diuretic, emmenagogue, emollient, febrifuge, nervine, relaxant, stimulant, stomachic, tonic, and vermifuge properties.
It is commonly used in arthritis, rheumatism, gout, sciatica, dyspepsia, flatulence, colic, general weakness, hysteria, and painful menstruation. The flavonoid apigenin present in chamomile has been associated with cardiovascular protection. It is also traditionally used to relieve mastitis, menstrual discomfort, and premenstrual tension.
Modern herbal practice recognises chamomile for its calming effect on the nerves, promoting restful sleep and reducing anxiety without impairing coordination. It has been safely used to soothe restless children. Chamomile also supports skin health, enhances immune response by stimulating white blood cells, and may help prevent and heal gastric ulcers.
The essential oil has strong antispasmodic properties. Externally, chamomile is applied to relieve rashes, pain, swelling, bruises, wounds, and sores. Flower poultices are traditionally used in sprains, bruises, and rheumatic conditions.
Recommended Dosage
