Description

Historical records from ancient civilizations show that this herb has been used as a digestive aid for more than 3,000 years. The seeds possess acrid, anodyne, anthelmintic, antibacterial, antioxidant, antispasmodic, aromatic, bitter, calmative, cardiotonic, carminative, cholagogue, diaphoretic, digestive, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, febrifuge, galactagogue, resolvent, stimulant, stomachic, and thermogenic properties.

The seeds are traditionally used to relieve menstrual pain when combined with antispasmodics and are valued for supporting healthy metabolism. They are particularly effective in digestive complaints such as stress-related indigestion, hyperacidity, flatulence, dyspepsia, hiccups, colic, and abdominal pain in both children and adults. Chewing the seeds helps eliminate bad breath.

Research has demonstrated that the essential oil possesses antibacterial activity and inhibits harmful intestinal bacteria, including E. coli. For this reason, the herb is traditionally used as supportive therapy in recurrent urinary tract infections associated with E. coli. It is also included in herbal formulations for cough, cold, and flu and acts as a mild diuretic.

Additionally, the seeds stimulate breast-milk production in nursing mothers and, when used regularly, help reduce colic in infants.
