Description
The herb (not the sweet confection) has been valued for centuries as both a nourishing food and a gentle medicine. It possesses alterative, antacid, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antitussive, aphrodisiac, demulcent, diuretic, emollient, expectorant, galactagogue, immune-tonic, laxative, nutritive, rejuvenative, and soothing properties. The name Althaea is derived from a classical term meaning “to heal,” reflecting its long-standing medicinal use.
Its strong demulcent action makes it especially beneficial in respiratory conditions such as bronchial asthma, sore throat, bronchial catarrh, pleurisy, and dry, irritating cough. It is also traditionally used in intestinal disorders including colitis, diverticulitis, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The herb soothes irritation of the oral cavity, pharynx, and gastric lining, and supports recovery in mild inflammatory conditions of the digestive tract.
Marshmallow supports immune function by stimulating white blood cell production and provides nutritional support through its natural content of beta-carotene, amino acids, minerals, and vitamins. It is also used to soothe irritation caused by kidney and bladder stones.
The herb is particularly rich in mucilage (highest in the root), which helps calm inflammation, nourish tissues, moisturise the skin, support bone marrow health, and promote tissue repair and healing.
