Description
Onions have been used for medicinal purposes for more than 4,000 years and were highly regarded in classical medicine. The bulb exhibits analgesic, anthelmintic, antiasthmatic, antibacterial, antidiabetic, anticancer, anticholesterolemic, anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antirheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, aphrodisiac, carminative, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, febrifuge, hypoglycaemic, hypotensive, lithontriptic, rubefacient, stimulant, stomachic, and tonic properties.
Onions contain numerous bioactive compounds that support cardiovascular health by helping reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Regular dietary use supports circulation, offsets the risk of angina and arteriosclerosis, strengthens immune function, and provides protection against oxidative stress. Their antibacterial and antifungal actions help protect against colds, oral infections, and gastrointestinal disturbances, while also supporting dental health. Long-term use has also been associated with reduced risk of bone density loss.
Onions are traditionally used in respiratory conditions such as flu, cough, bronchitis, whooping cough, and asthma, where they help loosen lung congestion and improve airway function. They stimulate saliva and digestive secretions, aiding digestion and appetite. Two key compounds—sulphur and quercetin—act as powerful antioxidants, neutralising free radicals and protecting cellular membranes.
Regular consumption has demonstrated hypoglycaemic effects, supporting blood sugar regulation. Onions are also traditionally valued as a sexual tonic, helping restore vitality, improve reproductive strength, and enhance overall potency. Experimental studies have supported their traditional use in male reproductive health by showing improvements in sperm count and reproductive organ health.
