Description
The leaves have been used in Ayurvedic medicine for more than 2,000 years, primarily for disorders of the respiratory system. They possess alterative, anthelmintic, antiasthmatic, antispasmodic, antitussive, bronchodilatory, diuretic, powerful expectorant, febrifuge, mucolytic, sedative, oxytocic, and uterotonic properties.
They are particularly well known for their effectiveness in bronchitis and other chest-related conditions. In acute bronchitis, they provide significant relief, especially when sputum is thick and difficult to expel. In chronic bronchitis, they help reduce coughing and liquefy sputum, allowing it to be expelled more easily. The leaves are also traditionally used in cold, cough, asthma, tuberculosis, and whooping cough.
In addition to respiratory benefits, the leaves are known to strengthen and invigorate the uterus and have traditionally been used during labour to facilitate childbirth. They are also used to control internal and external bleeding, including conditions such as peptic ulcers, piles, and bleeding gums. Their astringent and haemostatic actions make them useful in diarrhoea, dysentery, haemoptysis, and bleeding associated with dysentery.
Due to their antispasmodic properties, the leaves are considered particularly beneficial in painful menstruation (dysmenorrhoea), a use supported by traditional clinical observations.
