Description
The dried rhizomes possess a wide range of therapeutic actions, including analgesic, anthelmintic, anticonvulsant, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antitussive, aphrodisiac, aromatic, bitter, carminative, digestive, expectorant, febrifuge, nervine, rejuvenative, sedative, stimulant, stomachic, thermogenic, and general tonic properties.
In Ayurvedic medicine, it is highly valued as a rejuvenating herb for the brain and nervous system. It is traditionally used in digestive disorders such as dyspepsia, gastritis, ulcers, abdominal cramps, flatulence, and griping pain. It helps expel intestinal gases, reduce fever, promote healthy digestion, and regulate appetite.
The herb supports respiratory health by encouraging bronchial secretions and easing cough, asthma, bronchitis, and throat irritation. It also exhibits an antihistamine-like effect and is traditionally used in hay fever and common colds. Its nervine and sedative actions make it useful in mental and neurological conditions such as depression, hysteria, neuralgia, insomnia, and nervous debility.
Traditionally, it has been used to aid recovery after stroke and to support detoxification following the use of anaesthetics. In children, it is given in carefully regulated doses to support mental development and intelligence.
In small doses, it helps reduce excess stomach acidity, while moderate doses stimulate digestive secretions, making it useful in anorexia nervosa and poor appetite. Excessive doses, however, may cause nausea and vomiting.
Externally, it is traditionally applied in chronic rheumatism and paralysed limbs.
