This natural herbal gum is highly valued in traditional medicine for its broad therapeutic profile. It possesses analgesic, antidiarrhoeal, antimicrobial, antipyretic, aphrodisiac, astringent, cooling, demulcent, emollient, expectorant, haemostatic, hepatotonic, mucilaginous, nutritive, styptic, and general tonic properties.
Traditionally prepared as a strong decoction, it has been used in the management of gonorrhoea accompanied by oedema, chronic cough, and diarrhoea. It is also commonly used as a gargle for spongy gums, aphthous stomatitis, sore throat, and oral irritation. In classical practice, it has additionally been employed as a douche or enema in conditions such as gonorrhoea, cystitis, vaginitis, leucorrhoea, piles, and anal prolapse.
This gum is particularly beneficial in conditions involving excessive bleeding, haemorrhagic ulcers, non-healing wounds, dysentery, and burns. It has also been traditionally used to support metabolic balance in diabetes mellitus and to relieve conjunctivitis, intermittent fever, catarrh, and various urinogenital discharges.
In reproductive and sexual health, the gum is regarded as a strengthening tonic. It is used to address sexual debility, seminal weakness, spermatorrhoea, nocturnal emissions, and general genitourinary complaints. Due to its nourishing and stabilising effects, it is traditionally considered helpful in managing premature ejaculation and restoring reproductive vitality.
